NOMADS is one of the oldest and busiest award-winning, amateur theatre companies in the country. With its own 123-seat theatre equipped to professional standards it has recently celebrated its 75th birthday. It has grown from an itinerant group in the 1930s and 40s to combine an adult section, a youth section (Young NOMADS) and two sections for the youngest members – Kings Kids and Kings Kiddies.
Each season the company stages six to eight productions covering musicals, drama, farce and pantomime, plus a variety of related events such as Open Mic nights, concerts and a summer school. It is particularly proud of the number of alumni who have gone on to enter the professional arts world.
The Kings Theatre, the home of NOMADS (Newmarket Operatic, Musical and Dramatic Society – now a registered charity) is a converted Victorian school in Fitzroy Street and near the town centre. It has a comfortable bar/lounge area where patrons are able to socialise.
