We all know the rules and current guidelines are going to prevent us celebrating Valentines in the usual way, but by now we are kind of used to celebrating at home. Now more than ever, we need to treasure our loved ones and show how much we care for our friends and families in whatever way we can. So, to help, we have come up with some suggestions which we hope will encourage you to still mark the occasion and feel that love!
Let’s Indulge
With dry January over and perhaps a few pounds lighter due to that new year’s diet, Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to indulge. Whilst going out for a meal is out of the question, thanks to some of the takeaway services provided by our best loved eateries, you can still treat yourselves. Make your afternoon special with a cream tea from Nancy’s Tea Rooms, go spicy with Montaz’s authentic Indian cuisine, indulge in a three course dining experience with The Red Lion, Soham or mix things up with a creative waffle combo from the fabulous new Waffle Hut. Check out the Corney and Barrow online shop, Newmarket’s local wine specialists, and select something special to go with that takeaway.
Romantic Stroll
Whilst you may never have walked so much, mix things up and maybe try a new route or at a different time of day. As Newmarket sits on the borders of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and you will find many walks on our doorsteps. From the Stour Valley Path that leads you past the heathland gallops towards Stetchworth to the Icknield Way Path, one of the oldest roads in Britain. Current restrictions may prevent you from travelling the full 170 mile route but you can still follow this way marked trail for a few miles! Don’t forget Devil’s Dyke which provides some of the best panoramic views of our local countryside you could ever wish to see.
Time to Dress Up
If you have spent the last few months in PJs, perhaps Valentine’s weekend is the chance to get pampering and pull out your best outfit. Or even better, go online and shop locally for some home beauty products or a new little number. Check out Love Newmarket’s website for a list of all our local shops – they would simply love to hear from you.
Buy an Experience to Enjoy Later
From a luxury spa voucher at the Bedford Lodge Hotel, or a Chestnut Hospitality dinning voucher, you can gift someone an experience to look forward to. Or buy a Discover Newmarket voucher for a behind the scenes tour of the National Stud and visit later in spring time to see the newly born foals turned out in their spacious paddocks.
Movie Night
Round the evening off with a night of viewing, but give it a local twist. For those with Netflix’s why not watch the recently launched film The Dig about the great Anglo Saxon archaeological find at Sutton Hoo. Alternatively watch the new Personal History of David Copperfield film which equally boasts a stellar cast and was filmed in numerous locations in neighbouring Bury St Edmunds.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone, from the Discover Newmarket Team.
