On Tuesday 23rd August the Discover Newmarket Tour Guides are getting together to do a charity walk around the National Stud to raise money for the “Ray of Sunshine Paediatric Ward” at Kings College Hospital. Organised by Tour Guide Sandie Edmeades, read on to find out why.
Just before Christmas, Discover Newmarket Guide, Ann Totman’s 3 year old grandson, Jake Rice, contracted a virus. This led him to suffer acute hepatitis resulting in him having to have a liver transplant. Ann and her family virtually lived at Kings College Hospital during this time and feared that Jake was not going to survive his ordeal. Jake was in hospital for over seven weeks two weeks in ICU and 5 weeks on the “Ray of Sunshine” Paediatric Ward.
Kings College Hospital is one of only three hospitals in the country that specialise in paediatric liver transplant doing three or four of these major operations a year – three year old Jake being one of them.
Luckily Jake is making a good recovery and as a thank you to Kings College Hospital for saving this incredibly brave little boys’ life Ann and her family are trying to raise money to help refurbish the playroom and relative area of the “Ray of Sunshine” Paediatric Ward which became such a big part of their lives over the seven weeks of Jakes stay. It is hoped that by improving these facilities other recovering children and their families will benefit and that it will make a big difference to their time spent in the hospital under very stressful circumstances.

So, in support of Ann the “Discover Newmarket Guides are walking” to raise money to help with this refurbishment to benefit others in the same position. With kind permission of the National Stud, the Guides and their families along with Jakey himself will be setting off from the Wavertree Coffee House at 4 pm to walk the route that we all drive when doing our National Stud tours.
Any donation to this cause will make a huge difference. Donations can be made on Just Giving : Just Giving Jake Rice raising money for the Ray Of Sunshine Paediatrics Ward by clicking HERE.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to King’s College Hospital Charity, so it’s the most efficient way to give – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Thank you.
