Just a stones throw away from Newmarket, Ely Cathedral is highly regarded by historians and architects from all over the world for its beauty and size. As well as being a major visitor attraction, the Cathedral acts as a perfect cultural focal point for East Anglia by providing a unique venue for the arts & music, for exhibitions, concerts and theatre.
From 14th February, Ely Cathedral will be home to an extraordinary exhibition highlighting the history, artistry and allure of more than 40 wedding gowns. The exhibition focuses on how bridal gown styles and materials have changed and developed over the centuries, revealing as much about social history, as fashion and fame would.
Throughout the exhibition you can expect to see the exquisite craftmanship that goes into creating these beautiful gowns, that define one of the most memorable days in countless lives. Behind each of the gowns, is a personal story, whilst others have featured in award winning movies, including the wedding dress worn by Emily Blunt in ‘The Young Victoria’.
Equally, other exhibits include replicas worn by royal brides, such as the original ‘fitting gown’ designed for Princess Margaret’s wedding in 1960; and also a beautiful gown for a 1940’s bride out of parachute silk, which the bride made herself due to the war time rationing!
In additional to the bridal gowns, the exhibition will also feature a small selection of elegantly embroidered bridal veils on loan from the collection at The Royal School of Needlework.
A Celebration of Bridal Gowns will be open daily in the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral from 14th February till 17th March 2024.
Entry to the exhibition is included with a Cathedral visitor ticket.
