As reported by our local sporting correspondence, Stephen Wallis:
Some of Newmarket’s leading trainers will be at The Severals on Sunday 10 July, not to keep a close eye on their thoroughbreds, but to play in a charity cricket match against a Newmarket XI at the local club’s home ground.
“We hosted the match for the first time last year, the idea was brought to us by trainer William Jarvis, and we thought it was a great idea. About one hundred and fifty people turned up last year and we are expecting a similar amount or more this year” said club skipper Mark Nunn.
The T20 match is due to start at 2 pm with about nine trainers taking part. These include 2022’s 1000 Guineas winning trainer George Boughey, Charlie Fellowes and Tom Clover who will be swapping their race day suits for whites to support the club. The home side will include a variety of the club’s players who play in the 1st, 2nd and Sunday XI.
Last year’s match was a friendly and competitive encounter which Newmarket CC won by 21 runs.
The event at the Severals sports ground (CB8 7BP), which will feature a fully licensed bar, food and a silent auction will open at 12 noon. The club has a limited source of revenue and the money raised on the day will go to the club with a donation going to Racing Welfare.
If you fancy an enjoyable day out watching cricket, Sunday 10 July looks like a day to mark in the calendar. I wonder how those trainers will fare first time out at the crease. Inspiral turned in an exceptional performance at Royal Ascot after a long break. Come down to the Severals to see if the trainers can do the same!
