The summer holidays are finally here and thinking of fun things to do to fill those six weeks can be daunting. But fear not, we’ve pulled together a variety of child friendly and family fun activities that you won’t want to miss this August. Read further to find out more.
Wonka Workshop at the Kings Theatre, Newmarket
Based on the hit musical ‘Wonka’, this fun summer holiday workshop is perfect for children who love musical theatre. Taught by industry professionals, this exciting workshop is a great opportunity to introduce children to all the performing aspects of theatre.
This workshop is aimed at children between 5 and 12 years old, and will be held over 3 days with a showcase to friends and family on the last day.

Activities at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village & Country Park
It’s all go at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village this summer! From performances of Big Bad Wolf, the first of their Theatre in the Park series, to the Viking and Saxon Re-enactment Society, Meet Wuffa, there’s something for everyone. Visitors to West Stow can head back in time to learn about the history of the village, dress up as an Anglo-Saxon, explore the vast site and even say hello to the rare breed pigs and chickens on site!

Summer Holiday Craft Workshops at Burwell Museum
Looking to get crafty this summer? Why not head to the Burwell Museum this August, where they’ll have creative art sessions on every Thursday throughout the month. Each week they’ll be exploring different themes, inspired by the museums artefacts, so you’ll know, no two sessions will be the same!
Sessions must be booked in advance, and are £6.50 per child – adults must accompany children, but are free of charge.

Dinosaur Day at Newmarket July Racecourse
Head to July Racecourse this August for an exciting Dino-themed race day!
You can expect a unique, immersive dinosaur experience and even come face-to-face with a dinosaur, as Europe’s largest walking T-Rex returns! Not only that, but you can expect special guests, a Dinosaur hatchery, ranger classes, dino workshops and facepainting to make you look ROAR-some! There’s certainly fun for all the family on this race day.

Horse Games at the National Horseracing Museum
The National Horseracing Museum is showcasing a variety of lesser-known equine sports in their Peter O’Sullevan Arena. There will be four very different demonstrations, that’ll have you on the edge of your seat, cheering on teams and opening you up to a world of different equestrian sports. Demonstrations include, Mounted Games, Vaulting, Arena Polo, Horseball plus plenty of opportunities for have a go sessions. Normal admission fee applies with children and annual pass holders free.

Escape Room at the National Horseracing Museum
Bring your family (more suited to over 12 year olds) and see how well you work together to unravel a web of deceit, decode cryptic messages and piece together hidden clues in Newmarket’s new Escape Room. Based at the National Horseracing Museum, you have just 60 minutes to escape and claim your place on the leaderboard!

Chess Sculpture Trail around Newmarket
This summer Newmarket will be transformed into a game-board with a new interactive public art trail. Find the eight chess piece sculptures located around the town and unravel their story. Decipher each 18-character motto, decode the meanings of the heraldic symbols and have a go at making your own symbols and motto. Just one of the activities running throughout the summer as part of Newmarket in Play.

Kids Club at Phoenix Bike Park, Kentford
Phoenix Kids Club is back this August, with beginner, intermediate AND advanced sessions to level up their riding – from first pedals to sending jumps, they’ve got you covered!
