The Packhorse Inn

Revitalised and reopened in October 2013, The Packhorse Inn overlooks the green in the picturesque village of Mouton just outside Newmarket. The Inn was renamed to reflect the adjacent medieval bridge across the River Kennett. Inside, the local connections continue with the four house rooms named after the hills surrounding the village and the four ground floor rooms reflecting local river names.

Facilities

  • Eight individually-designed en-suite bedrooms;
  • 3 AA rosette quality dining;
  • 5 AA star accommodation;
  • Garden/terrace, and bar area; and
  • The Club Room for business meetings and private celebrations.

The Packhorse Inn is the bringing together of a number of strands to create both a traditional pub at the heart of the local community and a Suffolk tourism destination for a truly stunning dining and staying experience. It was the first to open in the Chestnut Inns stable, founded by former banker Philip Turner. Also in the group is The Rupert Brooke Bar & Kitchen in Grantchester, Cambridge and the third site which will open later in the year in Bury St Edmunds.

Dining

Food is a distinguishing feature with award-winning Chris Lee as the Executive Chef. As well as currently being the only restaurant in Suffolk to have 3 AA rosette status, the pub won “Best Food Pub” for the East in The Great British Pub Awards 2014 and was in the shortlist for the running for “Best Newcomer” in the Top 50 Gastropub Awards 2015.

The Packhorse Inn, caters for all tastes, from the affordable fixed-price menu (starting at £18.50 for 2 courses), through to the à la carte, which delivers smart, contemporary dishes full of vibrant flavours.

The menu is best described as Modern European and is prepared with passion, integrity and originality by a talented brigade led by Chef Phil Skinner.

The Packhorse believes in keeping things local, and says: “It makes sense to use local producers wherever possible. Food grown on our doorstep quite simply tastes fresher …because it is. And where a product isn’t local, we do our best to use local suppliers, who share our passion for good food.”
