04/01/2022

Planning a staycation? Then why not discover Newmarket in 2022! Set in rolling countryside on the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border, Newmarket is rightly considered the birthplace and global centre of thoroughbred horse racing, training and breeding, with royal connections stretching back to James I.

Visit early in the morning and you’ll see some of the 3,000 equine residents going about their morning exercise on the famed Gallops or making their way around the town – horses takes priority in Newmarket!

It was Charles II who popularised horse racing and it’s from his reign that it became known as ‘The Sport of Kings’.  Home to two Racecourses, there is always a buzz across town on one of the 39 race days.

But there doesn’t have to be a race meet on to enjoy Newmarket. Discover Newmarket run a series of fascinating, behind the scenes experiences including guided tours of the famed Gallops, The National Stud, Trainer’s Yards and Tattersalls Sales Ring to name but a few. A guided experience is by far the best way to learn all about this historic town with its strong Royal connections.

Charles II had a sporting palace and stables built that spans five acres in the heart of the town where the National Horseracing Museum is now housed. The complex also includes  an impressive art collection by the National Gallery of British Sporting Art as well being the flagship home of Retraining Racehorses.

With some superb accommodation and wonderful eateries, the town is well placed to explore the surrounding area of Suffolk and makes  for the perfect base for your staycation this year.
