Newmarket’s neighbouring city Ely, is playing host to more than 25 hand painted figures, with the latest exhibition, ‘Am I My Brother’s Keeper’ by British artist and sculptor Sean Henry, to be situated at the magnificent grounds of Ely Cathedral.
These life like figures, varying from 38cm to 3m in height, capture the human form with compassion, whilst depicting the emotions, struggles and joys that define us. Henry’s art goes beyond mastering technical skill, asking the viewer to feel empathy and understanding of the figures portrayed, as each tell a different story, provoking emotions. Each sculpture will be sympathetically displayed in unusual and diverse places, including vacant plinths, tombs and niches situated throughout the medieval Cathedral, echoing those of past installations.
From the Artic Circle in Norway, to the South Island of New Zealand, Sean Henry’s work has been exhibited worldwide. His sculpture of Sir Tim Bernes Lee, founder of the World Wide Web, has become part of a permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery, since 2015, whilst also being represented by the Osborne Samuel Gallery in London since 1999.
‘Am I My Brother’s Keeper’ will run until 1st September 2024, with entry to the exhibition is included with a Cathedral visitor ticket.
