The National Stud has announced that the first mares covered by Diego Velazquez have been scanned in foal. By Champion Sire Frankel and out of a Stakes-winning mare, Diego Velazquez won three Group 2 contests before landing the Group 1 Jacques Le Marois in a faster time than Dubawi, Kingman and Palace Pier. Among his first mares scanned are Mystical Air, a winning Kingman half-sister to Group 3 winner Carolina Reaper, and Avolta a winning half sister to Group 2 and Group 3 winner Jayarebe.
Diego Velazquez hit the headlines last summer when winning the stallion making Group One at Deauville just one week after being purchased by Sam Sangster Bloodstock. His new connections have been busy at the sales buying mares to support him in his first season, and have secured some very exciting prospects including LUCIDA a Classic placed daughter of Shamardal and winner of the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Royal Ascot, Listed winner and Group 3 placed MISS JUSTICE (Justify) and Stakes winner GALILEI (by Lemon Drop Kid out of a half-sister to outstanding producer Meow).
“Diego Velazquez ticks all the boxes for breeders and that has been reflected in the support he has received” said Anna Kerr, CEO of the National Stud. “His top-class first book features numerous Stakes performers and producers, and we couldn’t be happier with how this next chapter of his career has begun.”
