Established in 1766, Tattersalls Ltd is the oldest bloodstock auctioneers in the World. Since then it has established itself as the largest bloodstock auctioneers in Europe.
This renowned international firm offers 15 sales across its two sites – Fairyhouse near Dublin in Ireland and its headquarters in Newmarket, England. In total it handles the sale of 10,000 thoroughbred horses every year and has hosted a number of record-breaking sales.
However, it all began with a modest young grammar school boy from Hurstwood in Lancashire. Born in 1724, Richard Tattersall always had a keen interest in horses and, after beginning work for the 2nd Duke of Kingston-Upon-Hull, soon rose to the position of Stud Groom.
It wasn’t until 1766, when Tattersall purchased the 99-year lease on premises at Hyde Park Corner, that Tattersall’s Bloodstock Auctioneers was born.
From there his honesty and frank approach to business quickly gained him respect and he soon boasted clients from the Jockey Club, nobility and even Royalty.
It just goes to show that anything is possible with a bit of hard work, passion and determination!
