Are you looking for a fun day out in Suffolk? If the answer is yes, then our Short Head Tour is the perfect answer.
This tour offers a fantastic insight into Newmarket, the town that is known as the Home of Horseracing. Whether you are an avid racing fan, a lover of horses, hold an interest in history, or just looking for a day out in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, you’ll love this experience.
Newmarket’s history with the sport of horseracing dates back centuries, with the first ever race to be run under a set of rules taking place in the town, organised by King Charles II.
Our tour is a half-day morning tour and is therefore the perfect fun day out in Suffolk for families and kids, or for people with other afternoon plans. Our experienced guide will take you to visit the Historic Newmarket Gallops – Newmarket’s legendary training grounds – to watch the thoroughbreds training, then take you behind the scenes at a real working racehorse trainer’s yard to give you an exclusive insight into this secretive industry.
Following this, you will be taken to either the National Stud or the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art, depending on your chosen date. The National Stud comprises 500 acres of beautiful grounds, home to some of the leading stallions of the racing world. On your tour you will learn about the history and the workings of this amazing facility, and depending on the time of year, you will see mares, foals and stallions along the way.
The brand new National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art was opened last year in place of the National Horseracing Museum. Inside you will learn about the history of horseracing and the science of the thoroughbred and also admire some of the greatest sporting art in the world in the Fred Packard Gallery. On top of this, you will be able to visit the Rothschild Yard which is the flagship yard of the Retraining of Racehorses charity which helps to retrain thoroughbreds for a life after racing. You will even get a chance to meet some of the former equine stars that live on site.
All this makes for a fantastically fun day out in Suffolk, so what are you waiting for? Book today to secure your spot on our next Short Head Tour!
