The hotly-anticipated Newmarket Gold Season kicks of with the Cesarewitch Trial Day at the Rowley Mile Racecourse on Saturday 23rd September 2017. But what’s it all about and what can you expect? Read on to find out more.
The Cesarewitch Trial Day is so-called because of the Cesarewitch Trial. This is one of the races that takes place on the day and is a warm up for the famous and historic Cesarewitch Heritage Handicap which takes place at the Dubai Future Champions Festival on Saturday 14th October. This offers an opportunity to see the form of the competitors and really begin to get excited about the fantastic Dubai Future Champions Festival – the highlight of the Gold Season at Newmarket Racecourses.
The Cesarewitch Handicap was originally run in honour of Tsesarevich Alexander, who went on to become Tsar Alexander II, after he donated £300 to the Jockey Club. Since this inaugural running in 1839, it has been run every year and is an important feature on the calendar as it is the second leg of the historic Autumn Double (the first leg taking place at the Cambridgeshire Meeting on 30th September).
