Marc Chan’s multiple Group 1-winning star Kinross has retired from racing and will enjoy a well-earned retirement at The National Stud in Newmarket.
Trained by Ralph Beckett at Kimpton Down Stables, Kinross showed his potential with a highly impressive eight length victory at Newmarket by eight lengths as a two-year-old. In the seasons to come Kinross became a true flagbearer for his connections, collecting elite victories in the Group 1 Prix de la Forêt and Group 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes, alongside a host of other Group successes and placings in some of the world’s most prestigious sprints and miles. Few horses have maintained such a level of excellence and consistency over so many seasons, with lifetime earnings just shy of £2million.
Reflecting on his star pupil’s remarkable career, trainer Ralph Beckett said: “Kinross has been an absolute joy to train — a horse of immense talent, heart, and honesty. He turned up season after season, travelled the world, and gave us all so many unforgettable days. Horses like him don’t come along often.” Beckett added that Kinross’s success was as much a testament to his attitude as his ability, “He was a professional in everything he did — he thrived on his work, adored his routine, and was happiest when he had a job to do. That consistency and will to please are what made him so special to everyone in the yard.”
“Marc has always had a huge affection for Kinross, not only because of what he achieved on the track, but because of his remarkable character.” said Chan’s Racing Manager Jamie McCalmont “He’s been a superstar in every sense — a horse that has brought joy to everyone involved. What made Kinross special was his consistency — he delivered every time, whether it was Goodwood, York, Ascot or Longchamp. He became the horse we measured all others against. We’re incredibly grateful to Ralph, the team at Kimpton Down, and now to The National Stud for giving him the retirement he deserves.”
As Kinross settles into life after racing, his next chapter will be spent at The National Stud, where he will enjoy the tranquil surroundings of Newmarket’s historic breeding and education centre. Joe Bradley, General Manager of The National Stud, said “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Kinross to The National Stud as he begins his well-earned retirement. He has been a truly outstanding flagbearer for his owner Marc Chan, his fantastic team, and of course Ralph Beckett and everyone at Kimpton Down Stables, who have cared for him with such dedication throughout his remarkable career.”
Bradley added that Kinross will become a popular figure for visitors in the months ahead “Kinross will spend the next few weeks settling into his new surroundings and enjoying some well-deserved downtime before taking up residence on the National Stud tour route later in the spring and summer. Visitors will have the wonderful opportunity to see him relaxing and thriving in his new home as he embarks on this exciting next chapter of life here at the Stud.”
