However, despite the huge amount of amazing talent that has competed in Newmarket in 2017, one name has dominated throughout, impressing time and time again and storming to a monumental season result!
Below we have put together a Newmarket 2017 End of Season Round Up which offers a run down of all the fantastically exciting Group 1 races that have taken place at the Rowley Mile and July Course in 2017.
Not only was the 2,000 Guineas Stakes the first British Classic of 2017, but also the first QIPCO British Champions Series race of the year and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
The fantastic Churchill was victorious, taking the first classic of the season, ridden by Ryan Moore who took his second 2,000 Guineas win, and trained by Aidan O’Brien who set a new record by securing his whopping eighth 2,000 Guineas victory!
Ahead of the 1000 Guineas Stakes, everyone was talking about Rhododendron who was dominating the market, however, on the day it was stablemate Winter that took victory, providing jockey Wayne Lordan with his first Cassic Winner on the Rowley Mile.
This completed a fantastic weekend for trainer Aidan O’Brien, taking a 1000 Guineas one-two to add to his win in the 2000 Guineas on Saturday. What a start to the season for the Ballydoyle-based trainer!
It was once again Ryan Moore that gained Aidan O’Brien his eighth British Champions Series win in 2017 at the Falmouth Stakes. Filly Roly Poly led from the start under Moore and the 6-4 favourite made it look easy!
Harry Angel was the star of the show at the Darley July Cup. Gaining the lead into the last furlong under jockey Adam Kirby, he took control and held it to the finish.
This talented colt, combined with Clive Cox’s training skills and Kirby’s expert control, gave owner, Sheik Mohammed a very pleasant 68th birthday present!
Aidan O’Brien was back in full force at the Cambridgeshire Meeting, taking victory with 2yo filly, Clemmie, in the Cheveley Park Stakes and further asserting his dominance this season.
Ryan Moore guided the full sister of 2000 Guineas winner, Churchill, across the line with a lead of a length and three-quarters.
The remarkable Aidan O’Brien seemed unstoppable at Newmarket Racecourses this season when he took his 20th Group 1 success of 2017 at the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes.
US Navy Flag, ridden by Seamie Heffernan, ran a strong race to see off stablemate, Fleet Review, giving O’Brien another Group 1 one-two at Newmarket!
Ryan Moore rode Roly Poly to a convincing win at the Sun Chariot Stakes occupying a good position throughout and holding off the favourite, Persuasive, by a length.
This was another Group 1 win and yet another record broken for trainer Aidan O’Brien when he took his 11th British Champions Series success in 2017.
Just when we thought Aidan O’Brien was unstoppable in Group 1 races at Newmarket Racecourses this season, Karl Burke’s Laurens came out victorious after a photo-finish at the Fillies’ Mile.
The win gave both owner John Dance and ex-jump jockey PJ McDonald their first Group 1 wins making for jubilant scenes in the winners enclosure when the result was announced.
We got so used to seeing Aidan O’Brien at the front at Newmarket in 2017 that we became a little desensitised to this remarkable trainer’s achievements. Not only did his 2yo colt, US Navy Flag win the Dewhurst Stakes, but the following three across the line were also his!
This amazing achievement was somewhat overshadowed by the fact that this was his 24th Group 1 win in 2017, putting him one away from matching US trainer Bobby Frankel’s record of 25 top-class races in one year.
With a few races left in 2017, we were all asking ourselves, can he really do it? Well now we all know the answer to that…
What a remarkable season from a remarkable trainer!
Overall a fantastic season at Newmarket Racecourses, filled with all the usual thrills and spills. Of course, all of us here at Discover Newmarket would have liked to see a few more home wins from our Newmarket trainers, but being able to witness one of the greatest trainers of our generation impress time and time again was an absolute honour!
